After a Riverside injury

We represent people hurt in the City of Riverside and the families of people killed here. A claim here turns on where the case is filed and by when, what the state's crash data says about this city, where you are treated, who writes the report, and how we work a file from Los Angeles. Where a crash happened on the job, we flag the workers' compensation issue as well. If your crash was east or west of the city, read our Moreno Valley or Corona pages.

Negligence is the failure to use ordinary care, stated in Civil Code section 1714. Comparative fault reduces a recovery by the injured person's own share of responsibility rather than ending it, under Li v. Yellow Cab Co. A limited civil case is one that stays under the limited civil threshold; anything above it is unlimited civil, and in Riverside County that difference decides the building.

Riverside County Superior Court sets filing locations by administrative order of the presiding judge under Local Rule 3115. The order in force, revised July 8, 2026 and effective August 1, 2026, states that "all unlimited civil cases, including petitions for extraordinary relief and Writs of Mandate (non-CEQA) shall be filed in the following courthouses." For the western county that courthouse is the Riverside Historic Courthouse. Limited civil goes elsewhere, by zip code.

Local factors in Riverside cases

The Santa Ana Canyon commute is the defining fact of this city. Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic puts SR 91 at 274,000 vehicles a day where it crosses the Orange County line. That is Riverside County residents driving to Orange County jobs and back, so a Riverside crash often has an Orange County defendant, an Orange County employer and treatment on the other side of the hills.

Two courthouses, split by the value of the case. A claim worth less than the limited civil threshold is filed in Moreno Valley or Corona; a serious injury claim is filed on Main Street in Riverside. It changes the drive, the judge and the calendar.

Motorcycles, at the county level. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks Riverside County 6 of 58 California counties for motorcycle victims, with 929 people killed or injured in 2023, while the city itself sits at 8 of 15 with 89. Rank 1 is the worst. The county figure is the one that shapes how a defense carrier reads a rider's file here.

Riverside crash data

The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks each city against others of similar size, using crash data, state population estimates and daily vehicle miles traveled. Riverside sits in group A, the 15 largest cities, with a 2023 population of 321,538 and 3,400,540 daily vehicle miles traveled. Rank 1 is the worst in the group, so 6 of 15 on the top line is a poor result, not a good one.

One caveat belongs with those totals. The rankings count crashes inside incorporated cities, including state highways within city limits that share jurisdiction with the California Highway Patrol. The agency states that "if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city." The 91, the 60 and the 215 all run through Riverside, so the city's own figures understate the freeway share.

Hospitals nearby

Riverside is better covered than most Inland Empire cities. HCA Riverside Community Hospital, 4445 Magnolia Avenue, 542 licensed beds, is listed as a Level I trauma center on the California EMS Authority list updated October 22, 2025. Riverside University Health System Medical Center, the county hospital at 26520 Cactus Avenue in Moreno Valley, 362 beds, is listed there too. Kaiser Foundation Hospital Riverside on Magnolia, 225 beds, and Doctors Hospital of Riverside on Jackson Street, 187 beds, take much of the rest.

Trauma designation carries more than one label. The Riverside County EMS Agency's 2020 trauma plan update records Riverside Community Hospital as an American College of Surgeons verified Level II adult center, and the state list now shows Level I. Both come from real documents, and we cite whichever one we rely on rather than blending them. What matters to your claim is simpler: the hospital that treats you holds the records, sends the bills, and may assert a lien, a legal claim on your settlement for the cost of care.

Crashes on the 91 in Riverside

Three freeways braid together at the 60, 91 and 215 interchange. Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic shows SR 91 at 274,000 vehicles a day at the county line and 226,000 to 228,000 at Tyler Street. It shows 214,000 to 228,000 at La Sierra Avenue and 207,000 to 229,000 at Pierce Street and Magnolia Avenue. SR 60 carries 163,000 to 173,000 at Main Street and 154,000 at the junction. Our guide to freeway accidents covers what those speeds do to the evidence.

On surface streets, Magnolia and University Avenues carry the city, the Mission Inn district concentrates pedestrians downtown, and UC Riverside sits on the east side beside the 60 and the 215. A student on foot at a crossing and a commuter on the 91 are both Riverside cases and share almost nothing else.

The CHP Riverside Area office says it serves most of western Riverside County, which it calls one of the largest and most populated metropolitan areas in Southern California, with approximately 2,492,000 residents countywide. It patrols Interstate 15, Interstate 215, State Route 60, State Route 71, State Route 74 and State Route 91. A crash on the 91 is therefore a CHP file and a crash on Magnolia Avenue is a city file. The report drives the adjuster's first decision on liability.

Our process in Riverside cases

Our headquarters are in Tarzana, and you do not have to come to it. Most of a case runs by phone, text and email, we take the calls from the other insurer including the recorded statement request, and we travel for the depositions, mediations and hearings.

  1. 1
    Treatment first

We get you to the right doctors, on a lien if you have no coverage, and keep the care continuous. A gap in treatment is the first thing an adjuster argues.

  2. 2
    Every party, every policy

A Santa Ana Canyon crash often has an Orange County driver, employer or insurer behind it. We identify each of them before we make a demand, because the available coverage sets the ceiling on the case.

  3. 3
    The demand, then filing

A demand is the written package of records, bills, wage loss and liability proof that starts the negotiation. If the number comes back wrong, we file at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street inside the two year deadline.

The deeper law on each case type sits on our practice pages: Los Angeles car accident lawyer, Los Angeles truck accident lawyer, Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer, Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer and Los Angeles wrongful death lawyer.

Exceptions in Riverside cases

  • The claim is small. Then it is not filed in Riverside at all. Limited civil from a Riverside zip code goes to Moreno Valley or Corona under the order effective August 1, 2026.
  • A public entity is involved. A city or county vehicle, or a road defect, puts you on the six month clock in Government Code section 911.2. See our guide to being injured on government property.
  • The at fault driver was working. A crash on the 91 during the commute is often a crash with an employer behind it, which changes the available coverage and the defendants.
  • The other driver carries the state minimum. One surgery passes it, and your own coverage becomes the case. See the California minimum limits and uninsured motorist claims.

Next steps

The answer depends on what the case is worth. A serious injury case is filed at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street, a small one in Moreno Valley or Corona, and either way you have two years, or six months if a public entity is in it. Treatment is at Riverside Community or the county hospital in Moreno Valley, and your report comes from Riverside Police or the CHP on Lincoln Avenue. We also serve Corona, Moreno Valley and San Bernardino, and every city is on our locations page.

Questions about Riverside cases

Where will my Riverside injury case be filed?
It depends on the value. Under the Riverside County presiding judge's order effective August 1, 2026, all unlimited civil cases in the western county are filed at the Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main Street. Limited civil cases from Riverside zip codes are filed at the Moreno Valley Courthouse on Heacock Street or the Corona Courthouse on South Buena Vista, depending on the zip code.
Why would my case be filed in Moreno Valley or Corona?
Because the county court assigns limited civil filings by zip code. The order sends limited civil from 92501, 92502, 92506, 92507, 92508 and 92513 to 92522 to Moreno Valley, and from 92503, 92504, 92505 and 92509 to Corona. Unlimited civil, which is where most serious injury cases sit, stays at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street in Riverside.
How long do I have to file a claim after a crash in Riverside?
Two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1, and two years from the death for a wrongful death claim. If a public entity is involved, such as a City of Riverside vehicle or a road defect, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months. After a written rejection, Government Code section 945.6 gives you six months to sue.
Who investigates a crash on the 91 in Riverside?
The California Highway Patrol, Riverside Area, at 8118 Lincoln Ave., Riverside 92504. The office says it patrols Interstate 15, Interstate 215, State Route 60, State Route 71, State Route 74 and State Route 91 across most of western Riverside County. A crash on Magnolia Avenue, University Avenue or another city street is a Riverside Police Department report instead.
Which hospital will I be taken to after a serious crash in Riverside?
Most likely HCA Riverside Community Hospital, 4445 Magnolia Avenue, which has 542 licensed beds and is listed as a Level I trauma center on the California EMS Authority list updated October 22, 2025. The county hospital, Riverside University Health System Medical Center at 26520 Cactus Avenue in Moreno Valley, is the other designated center within about ten miles.
Why does the 91 matter so much to a Riverside injury case?
Because of who is on it. Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic shows 274,000 vehicles a day where State Route 91 crosses the Orange County line, which is the Santa Ana Canyon commute. That regularly puts an Orange County driver, an Orange County employer or an out of county insurer on the other side of a Riverside crash.
Do I have to come to your office?
No. Our headquarters are in Tarzana, and you do not have to make the drive. We work by phone and text, come to you when something has to happen in person, and travel for depositions, mediations and court dates at the Historic Courthouse. Riverside is the closest of the Inland Empire cities we serve, but it is still an hour of freeway.
What if I was partly at fault?
You still recover, reduced by your share. California uses pure comparative fault, so a jury that values the harm at $100,000 and finds you 30 percent responsible enters judgment for $70,000. There is no cutoff at 50 percent. An adjuster who assigns you a percentage in the first phone call is negotiating, not deciding.
