Those crossings are on Colorado Boulevard, Lake Avenue and Fair Oaks, arterials that carry regional traffic through a walking downtown, next to Caltech, Pasadena City College and a large hospital campus.

You are likely treated in the city where you were hurt

Huntington Hospital is a Level II trauma center with 493 licensed beds inside Pasadena, and it is the only trauma center between downtown Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley foothills. That keeps the medical record in one place, which is unusual among the cities we serve and helps the claim: one chart, one billing office, one set of liens to resolve.

Event days are on the calendar

The Rose Parade and Rose Bowl events move very large numbers of people on foot onto the same arterials on known dates, and the California Highway Patrol says its Altadena Area provides escorts, traffic control and security for both. A crash on an event day has more witnesses, more agencies and more available footage than an ordinary weekday, and all of it has to be requested quickly.

Where your Pasadena case is filed

Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) governs venue. Every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property "must be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose." The courthouse follows the crash, not your address, so a Pasadena collision is a Northeast District case and a Pasadena resident hurt in Long Beach files in Long Beach.

A statute of limitations is the deadline to file suit. Miss it and the case ends on the calendar rather than on the merits. Section 335.1 gives two years for injury or death caused by another's wrongful act or neglect. A government claim is the written claim you must present before suing a public agency, and Government Code section 911.2(a) gives six months. Hurt on the 210 through Pasadena?

Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic counts put I-210 at 296,000 vehicles a day approaching Lake Avenue, 324,000 at Hill Avenue, 304,000 at Allen and 309,000 at Altadena Drive, from the Caltrans traffic census dataset. That stretch between Lake and Allen is one of the highest volume freeway segments in any city we serve, with interchanges spaced close enough that merging traffic never settles.

The other freeway fact is the 710 stub. Caltrans labels the Pasadena segment "temporary begin Long Beach Freeway" and counts 44,500 vehicles a day on it. A freeway that ends puts highway speed traffic onto surface streets, which is a liability argument as much as a traffic one. Below the freeways, Colorado Boulevard, Lake Avenue, Fair Oaks and Orange Grove carry that traffic through Old Pasadena and past the Arroyo Seco.

How dangerous are Pasadena's streets?

The Office of Traffic Safety ranks each city against others in its population group using crash counts, Department of Finance population estimates and Caltrans daily vehicle miles. Rank 1 is the worst rate in the group. Pasadena is in Group B, 62 cities in 2023, with a population of 140,054 and 1,659,580 daily vehicle miles, more travel than Glendale on a smaller population.

That is 978 people killed or injured in one year, and the worst older pedestrian rate in the group. The Office of Traffic Safety states one caveat itself: "if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city." Most 210 collisions therefore sit outside these totals, and the real freeway exposure is higher than the table shows. Where you are treated in Pasadena

Huntington Hospital, 100 West California Boulevard, is a Level II trauma center with 493 licensed beds, and it is the only trauma center between downtown Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley foothills. Someone badly hurt on the 210, on Colorado Boulevard or at the Rose Bowl is taken there. The hospital and the Pasadena Courthouse on East Walnut Street are about a mile apart. The designation comes from the California EMS Authority list updated October 22, 2025, and the bed count from the state facility file.

One trauma center in the city changes the practical side of a claim. The chart, the imaging, the operative notes and the billing all come from one institution rather than three, which makes the records complete faster and the lien negotiation cleaner. A lien is a hospital's or insurer's right to be paid out of your settlement before you are, and resolving it is the difference between a gross number and what you keep.

Who has your Pasadena crash report

The CHP Altadena Area says it patrols approximately 400 square miles, including the unincorporated communities of Altadena, La Crescenta and Chapman Woods along with Pasadena. It says its office sits minutes from the Rose Bowl and that it provides escorts, traffic control and security for the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl Game. A freeway crash here produces a CHP report from Windsor Avenue, not a Pasadena police report.

Told you stepped out mid block?

Being partly at fault does not end a California claim. Under comparative fault, a jury assigns each party a percentage and your recovery is reduced by yours, with no cut off. On Colorado Boulevard and Lake Avenue the insurer usually argues the person stepped out mid block. Where the crossing was legal, the answer is in the signal cycle length and the distance across, and both can be measured after the fact.

A Level II admission at Huntington can exceed the whole of an at fault driver's policy limits, the most that insurer will pay. The case then becomes a search for the rest: an employer behind the driver, a commercial policy, a rideshare period, or your own underinsured motorist coverage.
