What happens now after a Glendale injury

We represent people hurt in Glendale and the families of people killed there. A claim here turns on venue, deadlines, the state's crash record for the city, where you are treated and who writes the report. If you were hurt one city east, read our Pasadena personal injury lawyer page.

Nearly every claim here runs on negligence, the rule that a person who fails to use ordinary care answers for the injury it causes. Civil Code section 1714(a) states the rule, with the exception the other insurer relies on, for injury the hurt person brought on themselves.

What makes a Glendale case different

A safe city, except on foot after 65

Glendale ranks 53 of 62 comparably sized cities for total fatal and injury crashes, 60 of 62 on the composite measure and 62 of 62 for alcohol involved crashes, the lowest rate in its group. One line breaks the pattern: rank 2 of 62 for pedestrians 65 and older, with 22 older pedestrians killed or injured in 2023. An older population crossing a dense downtown grid is what the state's data describes here.

Definitive care is in another city

Three hospitals sit inside Glendale and not one of them is a designated trauma center. A person with a serious head or torso injury is carried past all three to Pasadena, downtown Los Angeles or Cedars-Sinai. That transfer shows up in the ambulance record, in two sets of charts, and in two sets of bills.

Four courthouses, decided by the block

The court's own locator returns Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena or Alhambra for an unlimited civil case here, because Glendale sits on the North Central and Northeast district line. Which one takes your case follows the location of the crash, so the answer is knowable, and we find it before filing.

Where your Glendale case is filed

Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) governs venue. Every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property "must be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose." The courthouse follows the crash, not your address.

Deadlines for a Glendale claim
ClaimDeadlineSource

Suit after a rejected public entity claim6 months from the notice of rejectionGovernment Code section 945.6

A statute of limitations is the deadline to file suit. Miss it and the case ends on the calendar rather than on the merits. Section 335.1 gives two years for injury or death caused by another's wrongful act or neglect. A government claim is the written claim you must present before suing a public agency, and Government Code section 911.2(a) gives six months. The rest are in our table of California injury deadlines.

Hurt on the 134 near the Galleria?

State Route 134 runs through the middle of Glendale. Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic counts show 221,000 vehicles a day at Pacific Avenue, 219,000 at Brand Boulevard, 218,000 at Glendale Avenue and 217,000 at Concord Street, with State Route 2 carrying 104,000 at Mountain Street. All come from the Caltrans traffic census dataset.

Those counts matter because of what sits under them. The Americana and the Glendale Galleria pull regional traffic onto the same Brand and Central off ramps that residents walk across, and downtown Glendale is a walking grid served by a freeway built for volume. North of the 134, Kenneth Road, Glenoaks Boulevard and the canyon streets climb the Verdugo Mountains on narrow, curving pavement, which produces a different kind of collision.

How dangerous are Glendale's streets?

The Office of Traffic Safety ranks each city against others in its population group using crash counts, Department of Finance population estimates and Caltrans daily vehicle miles. Rank 1 is the worst rate in the group. Glendale sits in Group B, 62 cities in 2023, with a population of 191,706 and 1,550,420 daily vehicle miles.

Total fatal and injury59353 of 62
Motorcycles2750 of 62
Bicyclists2351 of 62
Alcohol involved2862 of 62

Two caveats apply to those ranks. The Office of Traffic Safety states that "if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city." Collisions on the 134, the 2 and the 5 are therefore largely outside these totals. A good composite rank is also not a defense to your case: 593 people were still killed or injured on Glendale streets in one year. If you were hit while walking, our Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer page covers the right of way rules that decide these claims.

Where a serious Glendale injury is treated

Adventist Health Glendale, 1509 Wilson Terrace, has 415 licensed beds. Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, 1420 South Central Avenue, has 255. USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1812 Verdugo Boulevard, has 110. None of the three appears on the California EMS Authority trauma list updated October 22, 2025, and bed counts come from the state facility file.

The nearest designated centers are Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Level II with 493 beds at 100 West California Boulevard; Los Angeles General Medical Center at 2051 Marengo Street, Level I for adults; and Cedars-Sinai, Level I adult and pediatric. A Glendale patient with a major injury is treated locally at first and then transferred, or taken past the local hospitals entirely.

That produces records in two systems and often two sets of bills. A hospital that treats you without payment asserts a lien, a right to be paid out of your recovery before you are. We collect the full chart from both places early, because an adjuster uses a missing transfer record to argue your injuries came from somewhere else.

Who has your Glendale crash report

Who takes the report
Where the crash happenedAgencyWhere to ask
Brand, Central, Glenoaks and other city streetsGlendale Police DepartmentCity of Glendale
SR 134, SR 2 and I-5California Highway PatrolA CHP Area office, not the division headquarters

CHP Southern Division headquarters is at 411 North Central Avenue in Glendale, and the division says its officers "have called the city of Glendale home for approximately three decades." It also says that office is administrative, is not open to the general public, and that report requests have to be made at an Area office. A visit to the building on Central will not produce your report.

Blamed for the crash? You still recover

Being partly at fault does not end a California claim. Under comparative fault, a jury assigns each party a percentage and your recovery is reduced by yours, with no cut off. In older pedestrian cases the other insurer reaches for this early, arguing the person crossed slowly or outside the lines. Age is not fault, and the crossing evidence usually shows something different.

Policy limits, the most an insurer will pay under a policy, are often smaller than the bills from a hospital transfer. The case then becomes a search for other coverage: an employer, a commercial policy, a rideshare period, or your own underinsured motorist coverage. Where the street itself is part of the claim, the six month public entity clock applies, as our injured on government property page explains.

What to do next in Glendale

  1. 1
    Treatment first

We get you to the right doctors, on a lien if you have no coverage, and keep the care continuous. A gap in treatment is the first thing an adjuster argues.

  2. 2
    Both charts, both bills

Where you were treated locally and then transferred, we collect the records from every facility, including the ambulance run sheet, before the demand goes out.

  3. 3
    The demand, then filing

A demand is the written package of records, bills, wage loss and liability proof that starts the negotiation. If the number comes back wrong, we file in the right district inside the two year deadline.

Our headquarters are in Tarzana, and you do not have to come to it. Most of a case runs by phone, text and email, and we take the calls from the other insurer, including the recorded statement request.

Questions about Glendale cases

Where will my Glendale injury case be filed?
The court's filing locator returns four options for an unlimited civil case arising in Glendale 91206. They are the Burbank Courthouse at 300 East Olive Avenue, the Glendale Courthouse at 600 East Broadway, the Pasadena Courthouse at 300 East Walnut Street and the Alhambra Courthouse at 150 West Commonwealth. Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) sends the case to the district where the incident arose.
How long do I have to file a claim after a crash in Glendale?
Two years from the date of the injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1, and two years from the date of death for a wrongful death claim. If the City of Glendale, the County, Metro or Caltrans is part of the claim, Government Code section 911.2 gives you six months to present a written claim before you may sue.
Is there a trauma center in Glendale?
No. Glendale has three general acute care hospitals, Adventist Health Glendale with 415 beds, Glendale Memorial with 255 and USC Verdugo Hills with 110, and none of them is on the California EMS Authority trauma list. Serious head and torso injuries go to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Los Angeles General Medical Center or Cedars-Sinai.
Is Glendale dangerous for older pedestrians?
By the state's measure, yes. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Glendale 2 of 62 comparably sized cities for pedestrians aged 65 and older in 2023, with 22 victims, and 14 of 62 for pedestrians overall, with 72. Rank 1 is the worst rate in the group. The same city ranks 53 of 62 for crashes overall.
Who investigates a crash on the 134 in Glendale?
The California Highway Patrol. CHP Southern Division headquarters sits at 411 North Central Avenue in Glendale, but the division states that this office is administrative, is not open to the general public, and that report requests must be made at an Area office. We identify the Area office that holds your report and request it for you.
What if I was partly at fault?
You can still recover. California uses comparative fault: a jury assigns each party a percentage and your award is reduced by your share, with no cut off. Being found 25 percent responsible reduces a recovery by a quarter rather than ending it. Insurers press that percentage in pedestrian cases, so we gather the crossing evidence early.
Do I have to come to your office?
No. Our headquarters are in Tarzana. If you are in the hospital or cannot drive, we come to you. Sending documents does not require a trip anywhere.
What does it cost to hire you for a Glendale case?
Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, so the fee comes out of the recovery and there is no fee unless we recover. Case costs, such as records and filing fees, are disclosed in writing before we begin. If there is no recovery, you are not billed for our time.
