Hurt in Santa Clarita? What happens now

We represent people hurt in Santa Clarita, Valencia, Newhall, Saugus and Canyon Country, and the families of people killed there. A claim here turns on where the case is filed, the deadlines, who writes the report, where you are treated, and the roads that produce these cases.

There is a courthouse on Valencia Boulevard, and your injury lawsuit does not go there. That changes travel, scheduling and which judge sees the case.

Where your Santa Clarita case is filed

Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) states that every unlimited civil tort action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property must be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose. The courthouse follows the crash, not your address. Santa Clarita sits in the North Valley District, and the court's Filing Court Locator returns Chatsworth for an unlimited civil case from 91355. The Chatsworth Courthouse is roughly 25 miles from Santa Clarita, over the hill.

We publish only what the court's own tool returned, checked on September 4, 2026. It answered the unlimited civil question. It does not follow that limited civil or small claims go to the same building, so run your case type through the locator or ask us to. An unlimited civil case is one over the limited civil threshold, which is where nearly every serious injury case lands.

When a Santa Clarita case is different

Local Rule 2.3 cuts both ways, and the lines around this city are not where people expect.

  • You live here and were hurt somewhere else. A Saugus resident rear ended in Van Nuys files where that crash happened, not in Chatsworth.
  • The crash was on the 5 or the 14. The report comes from the CHP Newhall Area, and it will not appear in the city's crash statistics.
  • It happened in Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Agua Dulce or Val Verde. The CHP lists all four in the Newhall Area, and all four sit outside the city limits. A roadway claim there is aimed at Los Angeles County.
  • A public entity is a defendant. Six months to present the claim, then six months from the rejection to sue. Both run inside the two year deadline, not after it.
  • Your treatment left the valley. A transfer to a Level I center means a second set of records, bills and liens.

Hit by a truck at the interchange?

The interchange is the anchor. The CHP calls the Interstate 5 and State Route 14 junction a multi lane interchange that sees the lion share of the state's traffic between Central and Southern California, on its own Newhall Area page. When a commercial truck is involved, the case stops being about two drivers and becomes about a carrier, a maintenance file and an hours of service record.

The canyon roads are the other pattern. Soledad Canyon, Bouquet Canyon, Sand Canyon and Sierra Highway carry commute traffic on alignments with limited shoulders and long gaps between witnesses. Physical evidence there disappears fast, so we send preservation demands early instead of waiting for an adjuster to ask for a recorded statement.

We get you treated first and deal with the insurer second. The first offer is a negotiating position, not a valuation. Before that conversation we want the imaging done and the treatment gap closed, because a three week gap is the first argument the other side will make.

How dangerous are Santa Clarita's roads?

The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks cities using crash data, Department of Finance population estimates and Caltrans daily vehicle miles traveled, comparing each city only against cities of similar size. Rank 1 is the worst. Santa Clarita sits in population group B with 231,573 residents and 1,897,960 daily vehicle miles traveled in 2023.

Motorcycles3642 of 62
Pedestrians3758 of 62
Bicyclists2157 of 62

By rate, that is a comparatively safe city: 52 of 62 for total fatal and injury, 58 of 62 composite, and 62 of 62 for pedestrians 65 and older, the lowest rate in the group. The one category above the middle is drinking drivers under 21, at 26 of 62 with 11 people hurt. Source: OTS 2023 rankings for Santa Clarita.

One caveat matters more here than almost anywhere. OTS states that if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city. Santa Clarita is built around two CHP freeways, so these numbers understate what happens inside its borders.

Where you are treated in Santa Clarita

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, 23845 McBean Parkway in Valencia, is the only acute care hospital in the Santa Clarita Valley and its Level II trauma center, with 334 licensed beds. It is on the California EMS Authority trauma center list updated October 22, 2025, and the bed count comes from the state licensed facility file.

For the most severe injuries the destination is a Level I center in Los Angeles, and the nearest trauma center outside the valley is Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills, 330 beds, also Level II. That geography shows up in the claim as two sets of records, two billing departments and often two liens. A lien is a hospital's or insurer's right to be repaid out of your settlement, and unresolved liens are a common reason a settled case takes months to pay.

Santa Clarita has no municipal police department. The city contracts its policing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, so a city street collision produces a sheriff's report. The freeways and unincorporated roads belong to the CHP Newhall Area. Getting the right report from the right agency in the first week matters, because it is the document the adjuster reads before anything you send.

Questions about Santa Clarita cases

Where will my Santa Clarita injury case be filed?
At the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Avenue, Chatsworth 91311, for an unlimited civil injury case. The Los Angeles Superior Court filing locator returned that courthouse for Santa Clarita 91355 when we checked on September 4, 2026. There is a Santa Clarita Courthouse on West Valencia Boulevard, but under Local Rule 2.3 the district follows the incident, and this district files unlimited civil injury cases in Chatsworth.
How long do I have to file a claim after a crash in Santa Clarita?
Two years from the injury against a private driver or business, under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. If a public entity is involved, a city, the county, a school district, a transit agency or a road defect, you have six months to present a written claim under Government Code section 911.2. After a written rejection, you have six months to file suit under section 945.6.
Who investigates a crash on the 5 or the 14 in Santa Clarita?
The California Highway Patrol, Newhall Area, at 28648 The Old Road in Valencia. The CHP patrols 204 miles of freeway and 296 miles of unincorporated roadway across a 772 square mile territory that includes the Interstate 5 and State Route 14 interchange. A freeway crash inside the city produces a CHP report, not a report from the agency that polices city streets.
Which hospital will I be taken to after a serious crash in Santa Clarita?
Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital at 23845 McBean Parkway in Valencia, a Level II trauma center with 334 licensed beds and the only acute care hospital in the Santa Clarita Valley. For injuries needing Level I care the destination is a Los Angeles County trauma center, and the nearest trauma center outside the valley is Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills.
Is Santa Clarita a dangerous place to drive?
By the state's measure, no. In the 2023 Office of Traffic Safety rankings Santa Clarita is 52 of 62 for total fatal and injury crashes and 58 of 62 composite among cities of similar size, where rank 1 is the worst. The exception is drinking drivers under 21, at 26 of 62. Freeway crashes taken by the CHP are not counted in those city figures.
What if my crash happened in Castaic or Stevenson Ranch?
Those communities sit outside the Santa Clarita city limits, and the CHP lists both in its Newhall Area alongside Agua Dulce and Val Verde. A claim about the roadway there is aimed at Los Angeles County rather than the City of Santa Clarita, which changes who receives the six month claim under Government Code section 911.2. Tell us the cross streets and we will identify the right defendant.
Do I have to come to your office?
No. Our headquarters are in Tarzana, about 26 miles from Santa Clarita, and we have no office in the Santa Clarita Valley. We handle the first conversation by phone or video, we come to you when meeting in person matters, and nothing about the case requires you to drive over the hill while you are hurt.
What does it cost to hire you for a Santa Clarita case?
Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, which means our fee comes out of the recovery and there is no fee unless we recover. Costs and expenses are disclosed in writing before representation begins. The case review itself is free, and you are under no obligation after it.
