What happens now after a Calabasas injury

Nearly every claim here runs on negligence, the rule that a person who fails to use ordinary care answers for the injury it causes. Civil Code section 1714(a) states the rule, with the exception the other insurer will rely on, for injury the hurt person brought on themselves.

What makes a Calabasas case different

One city, two judicial districts

In a city of about 23,000 people, a crash on one side of Mulholland Highway is filed in Van Nuys and a crash on the other side in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills. The Local Rules add that where a filing area is described as north or south of a named street, the boundary is the centerline of that street. The block decides the courthouse.

Canyon roads produce a different kind of case

Las Virgenes Road, Malibu Canyon, Mulholland Highway and Old Topanga Canyon Road are two lane, curved and unlit in places, carrying commuters, weekend motorcycle traffic and horse property access. That produces head on and run off road collisions rather than freeway rear end collisions. The evidence changes with it: fewer cameras, fewer witnesses, and a case that turns on scene physics.

Treatment starts in another city

Because there is no hospital in Calabasas, the ambulance leaves the city, and the first treating doctors, the imaging and the bills are generated somewhere else. The medical record of a Calabasas case is a Northridge, Tarzana, West Hills or Thousand Oaks record from the first hour.

Where your Calabasas case is filed

Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) governs venue. Every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property "must be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose." The courthouse follows the crash, not your address, which is how one city sits in two districts.

Those assignments come from the court's filing locator searched for Calabasas 91302, and the addresses from Local Rule 2.2(b). A statute of limitations is the deadline to file suit. Miss it and the case ends on the calendar rather than on the merits. Section 335.1 gives two years for injury or death caused by another's wrongful act or neglect. A government claim is a written claim you must present before you may sue a public agency at all, and Government Code section 911.2(a) gives six months. Hurt on the 101 or Las Virgenes?

US 101 runs the length of Calabasas. Caltrans' current published annual average daily traffic counts show 180,000 vehicles a day at Parkway Calabasas, 170,000 at Las Virgenes Canyon Road and 151,000 at Lost Hills Road, from the Caltrans traffic census dataset. The freeway sheds roughly 30,000 vehicles a day across the city.

The second road system is the canyons. Caltrans counts 15,900 vehicles a day on State Route 27 at Old Topanga Canyon Road, about a tenth of the 101. Those miles produce the severe cases: Las Virgenes and Malibu Canyon south toward Pacific Coast Highway, Mulholland Highway, and Topanga Canyon Boulevard. A crash on an unlit two lane road with no camera turns on evidence gathered in the first weeks.

How dangerous are Calabasas roads?

The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks each city against others in its population group using crash counts, Department of Finance population estimates and Caltrans daily vehicle miles. Rank 1 is the worst rate in the group. Calabasas sits in Group E, 103 cities in 2023, with a population of 22,856 and 242,720 daily vehicle miles traveled.

By rate, Calabasas is a mid pack to low rate city. Two things sit behind the numbers. The Office of Traffic Safety states that "if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city." The 101 and the state highway canyon miles therefore sit largely outside these counts. A low rate is also not low severity: the canyon collisions that do happen tend to be the serious ones.

Where a Calabasas ambulance takes you

The California licensed and certified healthcare facility file lists three facilities in Calabasas and no hospital: Calabasas Surgery Center at 23621 Park Sorrento, Parkway Surgery Center at 24003 Ventura Boulevard and Eden Surgical Center at 23951 Craftsman Road. All three have zero licensed beds.

The destinations therefore sit outside the city. Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, 18321 Clark Street, has 204 beds and no trauma designation. UCLA West Valley in West Hills has 249 beds, Kaiser Woodland Hills 274. The nearest designated trauma center is Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center, 18300 Roscoe Boulevard, Level II adult and Level I pediatric, 354 beds. To the west, Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks is Level II with 312 beds. Levels come from the California EMS Authority list updated October 22, 2025, and beds from the state facility file.

That spread matters at settlement. A hospital that treats you without payment asserts a lien, a right to be paid out of your recovery first, and a Calabasas case often carries liens from two or three systems in two or three cities. We collect the records early and negotiate the liens at the end.

Who has your Calabasas crash report

The CHP West Valley Area states that it patrols approximately 400 square miles and names Calabasas among the communities it serves, with Hidden Hills, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Malibu and Topanga Canyon. Its office is one city east on De Soto Avenue. If you were hurt on the 101 or a canyon state highway, the report comes from there.

Partly at fault? You still recover

Being partly at fault does not end a California claim. Under comparative fault, a jury assigns each party a percentage and your recovery is reduced by yours, with no cut off. On a canyon road the other insurer presses speed and lane position, because there is rarely a camera to contradict it. We answer that with evidence.

Two more exceptions come up here. Policy limits, the most an insurer will pay under a policy, are often smaller than a canyon collision's medical bills. The case then becomes a search for other coverage: an employer, a commercial policy, a rideshare period, or your own underinsured motorist coverage.
