What the state says about Bakersfield crashes

The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks cities using crash data, Department of Finance population estimates and Caltrans daily vehicle miles traveled, comparing each city only against cities of similar size. Rank 1 is the worst. Bakersfield is in population group A, the state's largest cities, with 414,451 residents and 4,089,360 daily vehicle miles traveled in 2023.

One caveat, from OTS itself: if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city. State Route 99 and State Route 58 run through Bakersfield and the CHP takes those reports, so this table understates what happens inside the city limits.

Where your Bakersfield case is filed

Civil cases in Bakersfield are handled by the Kern County Superior Court Metropolitan Division. The court's locations page lists the Metropolitan Division at 1415 Truxtun Avenue and the Metropolitan Division Justice Building at 1215 Truxtun Avenue, and it does not say which of the two takes a civil filing. We checked that page on September 4, 2026. Confirm with the clerk before filing, or ask us to.

Four things that change a Bakersfield case

Kern County is enormous, and four things about it change a case that starts in Bakersfield.

• The crash was on the 99 or the 58. The report comes from the CHP Bakersfield Area, which sits in the CHP Central Division rather than the Southern Division that covers Los Angeles. It will not count in the city's crash statistics.
• It happened on the Grapevine. That stretch of Interstate 5 is Kern County, and it is the state's main truck route between Southern and Central California.
• It happened in Rosedale, Oildale, Lamont, Pumpkin Center or Glennville. The CHP lists all five among the unincorporated communities it patrols, so the defendant may be Kern County rather than the City of Bakersfield.
• Tule fog is blamed for the crash. Fog is a documented seasonal hazard on the valley freeways, and we could not verify a fog crash statistic from a state source, so we do not publish one.

Hit by a drunk driver or truck?

Alcohol and freight shape most files here. With 340 alcohol involved victims in 2023 and the worst underage drinking driver rate among the state's largest cities, a serious Bakersfield crash is worth investigating past the driver. Where a bar, a restaurant or an employer put an impaired driver on the road, the case can reach past a minimum policy that would otherwise cap it.

Freight is the other half. State Route 99 is one of California's principal agricultural and freight corridors. The CHP maintains commercial vehicle enforcement facilities near the Grapevine at 32829 Interstate 5 and 1033 Lebec Road in Lebec, and at Buttonwillow, 29449 Stockdale Highway. Inspection records exist for those corridors, and in a truck case they are among the first documents we demand, along with the maintenance file and the hours of service record.

We get you treated first and deal with the insurer second. The first offer is a negotiating position, not a valuation. Before that conversation we want the imaging done and the treatment gap closed, because a three week gap in the records is the first argument the other side will make.

Where you are treated in Kern County

Kern Medical Center, 1700 Mount Vernon Avenue, 197 licensed beds, is the only Level II trauma center in Kern County. The county's other designated center is Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, at Level IV, more than 100 miles away. Bakersfield otherwise has a large hospital base for its size: Bakersfield Memorial with 385 beds, Adventist Health Bakersfield with 253, Mercy Southwest with 191 and Mercy Hospital on Truxtun Avenue with 144.

There is no Level I trauma center in Kern County. The nearest are Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and the Los Angeles County centers. In a catastrophic case that distance is a clinical fact and an evidentiary one, and it splits the medical story across two hospital systems: two sets of records, two billing departments and often two liens. A lien is a hospital's or insurer's right to be repaid out of your settlement.
