Checklist · your declarations pageYour own auto policyFind the coverage you already pay for.

The declarations page is the one or two page summary at the front of your policy, also in your insurer's app under policy documents. Most people have never opened it. It lists the coverages that pay when the other driver has no insurance, or not enough. Find each line below, then photograph the page for us.

Two photos, both sides. Finding the coverage is the first thing we do, because the policy limit is usually the ceiling on the whole claim.

Questions about your own auto policy

What is the difference between uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage?
Uninsured motorist coverage pays when the driver who hit you has no insurance or is never identified. Underinsured motorist coverage pays when they have insurance but their limit is lower than yours, and it pays the difference, not the full amount on top.
Does using my own MedPay or collision coverage raise my rates?
Not for a crash you did not cause. California's rating rules only let an insurer count accidents in which you were principally at fault, and MedPay pays regardless of fault by design.
Can I still make a UM claim if I was a passenger or a pedestrian?
Usually, yes. Uninsured motorist coverage follows the insured person, not only the insured car, so it can apply when you are on foot, on a bike, or riding in someone else's vehicle. The policy language controls, which is why we read it first.
