Rank 1 is the worst rate in the group. A high rank number is good news. The Office of Traffic Safety compares Lancaster only against cities of a similar size, adjusting for 174,629 residents and 1,770,140 daily vehicle miles, which is close to Torrance's daily mileage spread over a far larger area. On that adjusted basis Lancaster finished first out of 62. It is the worst set of numbers of any mid sized city we cover.
One caveat comes from the Office of Traffic Safety itself: "if a crash report is taken by the CHP on a road with shared jurisdiction, it does not count against the city." State Route 14 runs through Lancaster, so the freeway collisions the Highway Patrol works are not counted in the 1,541. The real total is higher than the worst number in the group.

Those are Caltrans annual average daily traffic counts, published with no count year attached. Volume falls by half between Avenue M and Avenue H, which marks the northern edge of the commute into the Los Angeles basin. Off the freeway the geography is a grid of mile square blocks: numbered Avenues running east to west, numbered Streets running north to south, long and straight, with State Route 138 and the Angeles Forest Highway leading out of the valley.
Where you will be treated
Antelope Valley Medical Center, 1600 W Avenue J, 390 licensed beds, is a Level II trauma center on the California EMS Authority list updated October 22, 2025, and the only general acute care hospital in the Antelope Valley. The next nearest hospitals are Henry Mayo Newhall in Valencia and Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills, both on the far side of the mountains. In a serious case the transfer time is a clinical fact and an evidentiary one, because it appears in the run sheet and in the timeline the other side will study.
The CHP Antelope Valley Area, 2041 West Avenue I in Lancaster, says it patrols about 30 miles of State Route 14 from Acton to the Kern County line and approximately 1,400 miles of unincorporated roadways, including the Angeles Forest Highway, the Angeles Crest Highway, State Route 138 and State Route 18. That single number explains most of what is different about a case out here: distance to the scene, distance to the hospital, and how often a crash on a desert road has no independent witness at all.
Proving fault when nobody saw it

The proof is what differs here. On an urban arterial the case is decided by storefront video. On Avenue J at night there is no storefront.
So the file is built from physical evidence: the event data recorder in each vehicle, the debris field and gouge marks, the 911 call timing, and the vehicles themselves before they are salvaged. That last one is urgent. A car released to a tow yard and sold for parts takes the download with it, and we send a preservation demand before anyone has valued anything.
Where your case is heard
The North District is the only district in Los Angeles County with a single courthouse. A Lancaster injury case goes to the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse, 42011 4th Street West, Lancaster 93534, under Local Rule 2.3, which sends injury cases to the district where the incident arose. There is no argument about which building, and no drive downtown for a hearing.
There is a second rule worth knowing when someone cannot manage their own affairs after a head injury. Probate matters in the county are otherwise centralized, but Local Rule 2.3 lets a conservatorship or guardianship petition be filed in the North District when the petitioner or the proposed conservatee lives here, and lets a decedent's estate be filed here when the decedent or the petitioner lived here. Situations that change your Lancaster claim
- The other car was never identified. Your own uninsured motorist coverage responds, and Insurance Code 11580.2 attaches conditions to an unidentified vehicle claim, including a report within 24 hours and a sworn statement within 30 days. - The driver had been drinking. Lancaster ranks 8 of 62 for alcohol involved crashes and 8 of 62 for drivers aged 21 to 34 who had been drinking. A criminal case runs on its own track and its own timetable, and it neither replaces nor extends your civil deadline.
- The other driver carried the state minimum. Since January 1, 2025 that is $30,000 for one person under Vehicle Code 16056. A trauma admission and a transfer over the mountains exhaust it, and your own underinsured coverage becomes the case.
- You owned an uninsured vehicle. Civil Code 3333.4, passed as Proposition 213, removes pain and suffering from an uninsured owner or operator, while the bills and lost earnings survive.
